‘No, I haven’t,’ Eve says. ‘Both keys were hanging there last Saturday. I know for sure because I rang him while I was in here and I heard his ringtone somewhere in the distance. Claire decided it was coming from the cellar and went down to look.’

‘Why didn’t you go yourself?’

‘I thought I heard a scream from the garden and presumed Maisie had fallen. I went outside to see to her and Claire went to look in the cellar.

‘And that didn’t strike you as odd if both keys are usually on there?’

‘Claire was in such a state when she came back that it didn’t occur to me, even when I put the key back.’

In that case, whoever has the other one could be either the victim or the attacker, and that could be anyone in the house. The key is in full view and accessible to everyone who has been in this kitchen.

‘You’re implying that if it is Oliver’s blood, someone in this house must be responsible.’

‘I don’t see any other explanation, Eve.’

‘There is only you and I, and of course Maisie, who live here. Claire is in every day, but she wouldn’t harm a fly. As for Mervyn, he’s just too old. If that is Oliver’s blood, I can’t think of anyone else who would do that to him.’

‘Oliver is not a popular man and just like us there are others who would like to see him harmed. You spoke about his drug habit only minutes ago. That means he will be involved with people who wouldn’t think twice about using violence.’

‘No one from that side of his life has ever come looking for him before.’

‘There is always a first time, Eve. Shall we go and take a look, see if we can spot something that might help us work out what’s happened?’

I can see from her face that she’s reluctant. ‘It might put your mind at rest.’

‘I doubt it. I’m afraid that we’ll find him lying dead down there, in a dark corner I didn’t look at.’

‘Did Claire find his mobile?’

She shakes her head. ‘The blood gave her such a shock she forgot about it.’

‘In that case, you have to go down and get it; there could be something useful on it.’

‘I don’t want to go in there again, that place gave me the creeps the first time Oliver showed me his wine collection. I’ve been afraid of being in there ever since.’

All this drama is exhausting; whether I get the evidence I need or not, I don’t know how much longer I can cope. I help Eve to her feet. ‘Let’s get this done and then we can relax.’ If that is even possible in this house.

‘There are actually two cellars,’ she says, taking the key from the hook. ‘The one we use for the wine and storage is the largest, the other is small and can only be accessed from an adjoining door. It’s locked, that key has always been missing and as far as I know no one has been inside it for years.
